Since 1932, children of all ages have delighted in one of Silverton’s most treasured events — the Kiwanis Pet Parade! We hope that you will join us on Saturday, May 21, 2016 at 10:00 AM as we celebrate hundreds of pets of all varieties – from snails to llamas – as well as marching bands, floats, and clowns. There is no registration or fee to participate in the parade. If you are interested in participating ‒ please see the Lineup by Category list, Staging Area Map, and Parade Procedures located on the Participants page. Participant’s lineup by category beginning at 9:30 AM. The Parade starts promptly at 10:00 AM on Coolidge Street and travels along Main Street to First Street ending at Eugene Field School.
Fire Pup has been named Grand Marshal of the 2016 Kiwanis Pet Parade as a celebration of the four-footed members of the fire department. For many years, the Dalmatian was a well recognized team member of each fire house. They went on fire calls with the other members of the department – clearing the way for the then horse-drawn vehicles, protecting the equipment and the horses, and preventing by-standers from getting too close. The Dalmatian today serves as a firehouse pet (mascot). While the focus of the parade is on pets, the fire pups’ two-legged partners will also be honored in gratitude for these selfless individuals who put the safety of their neighbors and community above their own; and to remember those who ultimately sacrificed themselves in doing so.
Planning for next year’s annual Kiwanis Pet Parade begins immediately after the conclusion of the parade. The success of the Parade is dependent upon the many volunteers who give of their time. The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) provides traffic control in the staging and disbandment areas; the Cub Scouts proudly march the colors; the SCN Youth Group carry all the parade banners; Representative Vic Gilliam and crew scoops the poop; Kiwanis members and parade sponsors set-up, coordinate, and teardown the parade. Silverton PD provides traffic control while Silverton Public Works crews provide barricades, cones, and equipment. Parade Sponsors provide awards, participant goodie bags, refuge roll carts for cleanup, parade banners, and more. State and City permits are secured, no parking signs placed, notifications sent to staging area residents, and parade materials produced. Thank you to our many volunteers and valued Sponsors who give of their time and resources for this time-honored event!
Kiwanis Pet Parade sponsors include Valley Credit Union, Silver Creek Animal Clinic, Republic Services, Safeway, and Edward Jones. Kiwanis is thankful for these community partners who come along side us to support this wonderful community tradition.
